Abstract:

The share of distributed energy resources (DER), using mainly renewables, is increasing all over the worldcontributing to the energy system decarbonization and decentralization. Microgrids and Local Energy Communities are two concepts that are based on the aggregation of DER. Thus, they present similarities and despite their distinct differences, are often confused. In this presentation the definitions of Microgrids and Local Energy Communities will bereviewed and their similarities and differences highlighted. The benefits of DER aggregation on the operation and planningof modern power grids will be discussed. The ways and the effects of DER participation in EnergyMarkets, i.e., individually, aggregated by an Energy Service Provider and organized in a Local Energy Community, will be shown and compared. The definition and status of Local Energy Communities (LECs) in Europe will be presented and the basic obstacles for their practical implementation will be overviewed. Finally, study case examples from applied European projects will be provided.
